How is Tumescent Liposuction Performed?
This type of liposuction is performed on an outpatient basis, allowing the patient to return to home or work that same day. It is used to remove fat deposits underneath the skin by use of a surgical vacuum. It begins with the injection of a special mixture made up of diluted anesthesia and saline, that is injection into the area to be worked on.
The injection mix also helps to numb the area, as well as break down the fat deposits, making them very easy to remove with the surgical vacuum. Once the plastic surgeon determines that the work area is properly numbed, a small incision is made so that the surgical vacuum can be inserted, and the fat deposits removed. After the predetermined amount of fat has been removed, a couple of dissolvable stitches will be placed to close the incision, and a pressure bandage applied to the surgical area. The bandage is standard issue for any surgery, to prevent blood clots from forming and breaking free, a condition known as deep vein thrombosis.
Benefits of the Procedure
For some people, achieving the body sculpting they wish with just diet or exercise may not be easily achieved, and they turn to procedures like liposuction to refine the results. This type of liposuction is considered to represent a great advancement in cosmetic surgery, because it takes less time, and is less painful or uncomfortable for the patient.
By utilizing less anesthesia because it is introduced with the liposuction mix, there is less down time for the patient. They can return home or go back to work the same day as the procedure, wearing the compression bandage for their protection, of course. With the exception of strenuous exercise, most patients can return to their regular daily activities within a few days after the procedure. As far as exercise, most patients are deemed fit to do so within a week or two.
Who is a Good Candidate for Tumescent Liposuction?
This procedure can be good for anyone who has cellulite or fatty areas on their bodies that they wish to be rid of. All that is required is that you be in good general health, which means not having any medical condition that would retard healing, like a compromised immune system or diabetes. For the best results, especially if the target site is the abdomen area, a tumescent liposuction should be performed in conjunction with a tummy tuck to highlight the work all that diet and exercise has achieved.
