Thanks to that wonderful process known as gravity, as we age, our skin loses its elasticity and begins to sag in places we really do not want it to, especially around the face. Luckily, there are cosmetic surgical procedures that can correct this process, and the most popular one of them all is the neck lift.
Tired of those jowls and sagging skin around your neck? Let Dr. Carter show you how he can restore those youthful contours with a neck lift today.
What exactly is a Neck Lift?
A neck lift is a type of plastic surgery that involves tightening the loose skin around the neck, as well as the neck muscles themselves. The loose skin is sometimes removed, with little or no scarring involved.
The procedure involves make an incision near the ear after which the skin is lifted all the way from the ear to the middle line of the chin and neck. After the skin is lifted, the muscle underneath can also be tightened, if necessary. To smooth out the appearance of the neck, soft tissue or fat deposits that might be present may also be removed or tightened during the procedure.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Neck Lift?
Anyone who is in good physical health, with no underlying medical condition such as diabetes, which could affect the healing process, makes a great candidate for this procedure. As long as you have realistic ideals on how much your appearance can be changed, the results of surgery before and after can be striking.
This type of procedure is often done in conjunction with other cosmetic surgical procedures, which could include a face lift and liposuction. During your consultation before surgery with the plastic surgeon, he can show you computer generated images of just how much your appearance will change following any single surgery, or however many electives you choose to have done.
What Happens During the Surgery?
The first incision is made typically behind the ear. The skin of your neck is then lifted up and tightened to achieve that smooth appearance you crave. If necessary, Dr. Carter may also tighten the underlying muscles so that they can properly support the tighter skin area. This can be done by making small incisions at the side of the neck and under the chin to ensure that the platysma muscles are tightened evenly.
The excess loose skin can be excised or cut away and if done in conjunction with a face lift, can be easily reattached with only a tiny scar behind your ear. If there are fat deposits in that area, a simple liposuction will remove it all quickly and easily. At the end of the neck lift, the ends of the tightened skin are placed carefully around the ear, done in such a way that it is near impossible to detect after it is healed. Drains will be placed underneath the skin if necessary, to reduce swelling and bruising later on.
